Cambodian law enforcement authorities recently raided two suspected online scam sites in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province, near the Cambodia-Thailand border, detaining 139 people, including 130 Indonesian nationals and 9 Cambodian women. Among the Indonesian nationals detained, 37 were women, while the involvement of those detained remains under further investigation.

The operation was carried out jointly by a special task force of the National Police and law enforcement personnel from Banteay Meanchey province. The two locations were a seven-story building and four eight-story residential buildings.

Police seized four safes, one handgun and a large number of devices, including mobile phones and computers, at the first location, and suspect that the electronic devices may have been used to carry out online scams. Law enforcement authorities have not yet announced whether the people detained have formally been charged, nor have they specified the exact use of the seized items.

Cambodia has recently continued conducting nationwide operations against online scams. The government said it would strengthen enforcement efforts and crackdowns on scam sites to severely combat related illegal activities. Police are further investigating the links between the people and items seized during the operation and scam activity. The responsibility of those involved will be determined on the basis of the findings and legal proceedings.
