The Club of Cambodian Journalists called on November 20, 2025 for more ethics training and urged careful language and verification to protect public trust and avoid legal risks.

The Club of Cambodian Journalists issued a statement on November 20, 2025, urging relevant specialist institutions to provide journalists with training in ethics and professional standards, as repeated mistakes by some journalists had exposed them to legal risks.
The club observed that some journalists continued to commit ethical and professional errors that attracted criticism and could lead to legal consequences, damaging public trust and efforts to advance Cambodia's media sector.
The club did not regard these errors as a new issue for Cambodia's media. It wanted to emphasize, however, that specialist institutions and media associations should continue prioritizing training, outreach and education on ethics and professional standards, while encouraging journalists to put them into practice. Many journalists understood these standards and applied them responsibly, but some appeared not yet to do so, particularly those broadcasting live from the scene. Neglecting or overlooking ethical and professional standards had led to criticism and legal risks.
The club said ethical and professional standards do more than help journalists avoid criticism and legal risks. They also open the way for journalists to improve their livelihoods with dignity and contribute to the development of Cambodia's media sector.
In these circumstances, the club called on all journalists to adhere firmly to ethical and professional standards. In particular, they should avoid emotion-driven commentary or judgments about news, use words carefully during live broadcasts, and verify and gather sufficient information before publishing it publicly, in order to earn public trust and avoid legal risks.
Finally, the club expressed its strong hope that all journalists would continue working with it and other media associations to improve adherence to journalistic ethics and professional standards, enabling media organizations and journalists to retain their honour and dignity and avoid misconduct harmful to the development of Cambodia's media sector.
