Kandal provincial military police arrested three suspects over alleged account hijacking and impersonation fraud; police said the scheme involved more than 50 cases and tens of thousands of US dollars in illicit gains.

Gendarmes in Cambodia's Kandal province recently arrested three suspects in a group accused of using messaging apps and social platforms for fraud over an extended period. Police said they hijacked victims' accounts and fabricated social media identities to carry out more than 50 scams, obtaining tens of thousands of US dollars in illicit proceeds.
According to police investigators, over approximately five months the group broke into messaging accounts and created multiple fake social accounts, impersonating victims including senior officials, civil servants, military personnel, monks, businesspeople and ordinary residents to defraud the public. Authorities said all the suspects had confessed to their conduct.

The gendarmerie has referred the three to judicial proceedings and urged the public to stay alert and protect social media and messaging accounts to avoid similar scams.
