A technical team from the APSARA National Authority's Department of Conservation of Monuments and Archaeology spent seven months repairing and strengthening brick tower No. 13, or G13, on Phnom Bakheng. The first phase of repairs to stabilise the ancient structure was completed in November 2025.
Department official Chhun Ratana said the first phase ran from May to November 2025. The team repaired the tower from its platform and wall base to the upper lintel, a total height of five metres. These sections had deteriorated through age, natural weathering of building materials and a long absence of maintenance.
Chhun Ratana added that the team found nearly 100 sandstone blocks from the tower's western platform and reinstated them in their original positions to strengthen the base and restore stability. This preserved part of the platform's original structural form. Before repairs, traces of only 11 platform stones remained in place.
After repairs, specialists observed that the previously dilapidated tower on Phnom Bakheng was stable again and could be displayed to visitors without the supports used before. A second phase is planned for next year, continuing from the lintel to the summit and progressively strengthening the whole tower.
