Cambodia's Interior Ministry warns of increasing scams, especially advance-fee fraud, citing about 200 reports and losses exceeding US$800,000.

Cambodia’s Interior Ministry recently warned that scams were increasing nationwide, with advance-fee fraud especially common. Interior Minister Sar Sokha said the ministry had received about 200 related reports over the preceding period, with total losses exceeding US$800,000, a worrying figure.
Most cases reportedly involved criminals posing as bank or microfinance-institution employees. They typically lured victims with claims of prizes, rewards or favourable loans, demanding an advance handling fee or deposit. Once they obtained the money, they cut off contact.
The ministry urged the public to remain alert, distrust unsolicited calls and purported prize notifications, and avoid transferring money or providing personal information without verification. Relevant agencies would also strengthen public awareness and law enforcement to curb the spread of such fraud.
