UPBIT estimates losses above 54 billion won and says about 12 billion won in tokens have been frozen; it promises to cover losses and temporarily restrict some services.

UPBIT, South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, recently confirmed a major cyberattack in which hackers illegally transferred some digital assets off the platform. Preliminary losses were estimated at more than 54 billion won. The platform said its security team acted quickly and had frozen about 12 billion won in related tokens, while continuing tracking and technical blocking measures.
The platform said that although large amounts of assets had flowed out, the company itself would cover all losses and users’ account balances and asset security would not be affected. Relevant departments had begun internal and external audits to check asset holdings and potential risks, while cooperating with international security organisations to investigate the source of the attack.
UPBIT also said that to ensure system stability and user safety, it would temporarily restrict some services, including certain withdrawals, until a complete asset review had finished. It pledged to restore normal operations once the system was confirmed fully secure and to strengthen its overall security defences.
