Thai authorities reported detaining 18 Chinese nationals and one Myanmar national near Chanthaburi and Trat on December 17; suspected border crossing and scam plans remained under investigation.

On December 17, Thai authorities intercepted and detained a group of people suspected of irregular entry during an operation against cross-border cybercrime in the Chanthaburi border area.
According to a notice, officers spotted suspicious people near farmland at the Chanthaburi–Trat provincial boundary close to the Cambodia–Thailand border, checked them and took them into custody. Nineteen foreign nationals were detained: 18 Chinese nationals and one Myanmar national.

The people could not produce lawful entry or exit documents and were suspected of crossing the border illegally. Preliminary Thai police inquiries suggested that the group planned to cross into Cambodia to engage in online scams and other illegal activities.

The people had been handed to law-enforcement authorities for further investigation and handling. The case was proceeding under legal procedures.
