Cambodian police carried out a new anti-scam operation in Bavet, Svay Rieng province, on November 17. Coordinated by the National Police and the national committee combating technology-based scams, several police units simultaneously raided two suspected scam sites and arrested 30 Vietnamese suspects. Police said the operation again demonstrated the government's determination and “zero tolerance” towards cross-border online fraud.
Police seized equipment allegedly used for fraud, including 115 computers, 10 computer system units, two laptops, 15 monitors, 16 call-centre phones, seven mobile phones and six passports. They said the equipment and documents would help trace funds, identify communications records and establish links in the criminal network.
Police said 21 of the 30 arrested had previously been investigated for involvement in fraud. The group's alleged methods included sending falsified photographs, luring victims into fake investments or persuading them to download apps to steal personal and banking information. Police described its methods as well established and highly harmful. Investigations into the organizers and wider network are continuing. All suspects and evidence have been transferred to Svay Rieng provincial police, and the sites have been sealed for further examination.
