From 6.24 million to 25 million: Cambodia's aviation ambitions

Recent figures from Cambodia's civil aviation authorities show continued growth at the country's three international airports in the first 10 months of this year. They handled more than 5.66 million passengers, about 14% more than a year earlier, reflecting a clear recovery. Aircraft movements exceeded 52,900, up 12%, while air cargo reached about 74,900 tonnes, up 14%, indicating a recovery in both passenger and freight transport. In October alone, passenger throughput at the three airports rose 11% from the previous month to more than 550,000. Aircraft movements increased at the same rate, while cargo exceeded 10,000 tonnes, growing by more than 50% month on month. Major passenger markets for international routes include China, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. As of the middle of this month, 34 airlines operated in Cambodia, including 30 international carriers. Techo International Airport had the most weekly aircraft movements, at 890, followed by Siem Reap Angkor and Sihanouk airports. The civil aviation authority said the three airports handled more than 6.24 million passengers in 2024, up 22%. To support long-term growth, the Cambodian government approved the draft National Air Transport Policy 2025–2035, targeting annual passenger traffic of 25 million by 2035. It would promote traffic-rights liberalisation, more destinations and services liberalisation, alongside tourism, trade and cultural development strategies, to improve the efficiency, safety and competitiveness of air transport.
