At a recent press conference on preparations for the 18th Cambodia Trade Expo, Pen Sovicheat, Secretary of State and spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said Thailand's abandonment of trade opportunities with Cambodia had brought important benefits to the domestic economy and other countries in the region.
He said that after Cambodia reduced imports from Thailand, market indicators showed that 60% to 70% of goods currently sold domestically were made in Cambodia. Goods still requiring importation were being sourced instead from Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and other regional countries.
According to the senior official, imported petroleum and related gas supplies now come from Vietnam and Singapore following the halt in imports from Thailand. Food and other consumer goods are also supplied by Malaysia, Indonesia and other ASEAN countries.
The Malaysian embassy in Cambodia previously reported that goods supplied from Malaysia to Cambodia had recently risen to three times their earlier level, showing that Cambodia's shift in trading partners had created opportunities for new regional partners.
