A shooting occurred at a Border Guard Force dormitory in the Shwe Hpone Pwint neighbourhood of Myawaddy, Myanmar, around noon on December 2. Initial reports indicated that an internal dispute had led to an argument among people in the dormitory. Amid the confusion, a Chinese man allegedly seized a Border Guard Force member’s firearm and opened fire, causing further chaos. Several local residents said they heard repeated exchanges of gunfire from the dormitory and saw Border Guard Force members fall wounded. A black vehicle that subsequently approached the building appeared to be caught in the shooting and drove away quickly after being hit. Two Chinese men involved in the incident fled barefoot into nearby farmland and were later taken away for investigation by the local village chief and personnel under the Border Guard Force. A disciplinary inspection team from the Karen State Border Guard Force went to the scene after the shooting. It is verifying casualties and the cause of the incident. Local law-enforcement authorities advised residents to stay away from the cordoned-off area and said further investigation results would be announced promptly. Compiled by this station.
