A spokesperson for South Korea’s presidential office said 107 South Korean citizens suspected of involvement in online scams had been repatriated from Cambodia since the two countries began law-enforcement cooperation in October this year. The cooperation responded mainly to a surge in fraud targeting South Koreans, with joint efforts to trace and arrest suspects and repatriate them in accordance with the law. The spokesperson said Cambodia had arrested a cumulative 154 South Korean suspects in the relevant cases by the end of November. At the same time, cases of South Koreans going missing or being illegally detained in Cambodia had fallen markedly. South Korea said it would maintain a tough approach to transnational crime threatening its citizens abroad. South Korea would also establish a special transnational crime response headquarters integrating foreign affairs, justice, intelligence and police resources. Cambodia had already set up a dedicated police unit to handle crimes involving South Korean citizens. Compiled by this station
