China’s Foreign Ministry said on the evening of December 17 that it would continue diplomatic mediation over the Cambodia–Thailand border situation. Its special envoy for Asian affairs planned to visit Cambodia and Thailand again on December 18 for a new round of shuttle contacts, encouraging the two sides to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation and restore peace and stability as soon as possible. A ministry spokesperson said at the regular press briefing reported that evening that China, as a friendly neighbour of Cambodia and Thailand, had been closely following developments in the region. In line with both sides’ wishes, China would continue shuttle diplomacy, encourage the relevant parties to exercise restraint and work towards each other, and play a constructive role in easing tensions and de-escalating the situation. China stressed that it was willing to continue making positive efforts in its own way to promote regional peace and stability. Compiled by this station
