On January 20, Thailand, China and Myanmar began a joint operation to return Chinese nationals suspected of involvement in online scams from Myawaddy, Myanmar, through Mae Sot, Thailand. The first group of more than 300 suspects had already been escorted back to China. The operation covers 1,108 people, with charter flights scheduled in batches from January 20 to 23. Thai authorities had completed identity checks and biometric registration. According to the report, all those being returned had been placed on a blacklist permanently barring them from entering Thailand. Outside commentators widely viewed the joint operation as a “clearance-style” strike against Myawaddy’s scam compounds, sending a strong signal that transnational scam chains were being systematically dismantled and subjected to sustained pressure.
