On February 10, police in Bavet, Svay Rieng, received a public report of a body wrapped in a black plastic bag beside a small road. Under instructions from the provincial police chief, Bavet police immediately opened an investigation and sent specialist officers to check the scene. After nearly two hours of inquiries, police identified and brought under control people suspected of transporting and abandoning the body. They intercepted a vehicle linked to the case at a villa in Bavet, identifying it as a white Toyota Land Cruiser bearing Phnom Penh licence plate 2BF-5705. A further search of the villa found 26 Chinese nationals, including one woman, whom officers preliminarily linked to telecom and online scams, and eight computers. Police took those involved and the evidence for questioning, and the case remained under investigation. Police said they would pursue legal responsibility and continue stronger action against cross-border telecom and online scams and other offences.
