On the afternoon of April 11, Preah Sihanouk Governor Mang Sineth and his wife visited a Koh Rong beach, presided over the opening of Koh Rong’s Khmer New Year celebration and cut the ribbon. The local festivities were scheduled for three days, April 11–13. The programme combined tradition and creativity, with folk games such as hiding a handkerchief and tug of war, as well as lobster-catching and jicama-eating contests. Demonstrations of wrapping sticky-rice cakes and making bamboo sticky rice also drew visitors. According to Koh Rong’s mayor, rooms across the island had already been fully booked, amid a lively tourism atmosphere. The report said local police had deployed security personnel to maintain order and safety over the holiday, aiming to let visitors enjoy the blue skies, white sand and coral reefs while celebrating the New Year.
