The beginning of Buddhist Lent is an important Buddhist observance and a significant time for monks and novices to study the Dhamma and monastic discipline diligently in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings. Buddhist devotees traditionally celebrate by offering packages of monks’ daily necessities, rice, drinks and other supplies according to their means. The observance takes place each year on the first waning day of the lunar month of Asadha, with ceremonies beginning on the evening of its fifteenth waxing day. Devotees and elders from the temple community carry Buddhist Lent candles, cloth, packages of offerings and other supplies in a procession around the main temple hall. Monks then deliver a sermon, followed by the formal offering of the candles and supplies to the monastic community.
