The roof of a three-story private school with roughly 1,200 enrolled students in the city of Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, collapsed on Thursday, October 15, killing at least 28 children and one female teacher, while over 50 others were injured. Local authorities confirmed that all the children killed or injured were aged 13 and under, while other children trapped under the rubble were rescued and taken to hospitals. Local authorities and police have now opened a rigorous investigation into the cause of the collapse, and the school owner has been arrested because the building was dilapidated and lacked safety standards. Building and school roof collapses occur frequently in Pakistan, where building standards are often overlooked and loosely enforced. Many structures are built with low-quality materials and fail to comply with safety regulations in order to cut expenses. Article by: Rithy
