Cambodia's telecommunications industry is taking another major step! The operating company of local telecom provider Cellcard, CamGSM PLC, recently signed a US$57 million loan agreement to fund 5G network construction, day-to-day operations and the refinancing of existing debt. This means Cambodian telecom companies are continuing to invest in next-generation communication networks.

According to the company's disclosure, the loan is being jointly provided by Union Commercial Bank and E.Sun Bank (China), Shenzhen Branch. The loan has a term of 7 years and an annual interest rate of 6.6%.

5G network construction involves base stations and upgrades to communications infrastructure. As the network continues to improve, users in areas with adequate coverage may enjoy faster download speeds, smoother video playback and more stable connections. However, the actual experience will still depend on local coverage, mobile devices and network usage. The loan itself does not mean that speeds will immediately increase or tariffs will fall right away.

Notably, Cellcard previously announced plans to expand 5G network construction and signed a multi-year memorandum of understanding worth approximately 300 million US dollars with Huawei, covering 5G, 4G, fiber broadband and data centers.

From everyday video streaming and online payments to remote work and business operations, network quality is becoming increasingly important. As Cambodia continues to advance its digital infrastructure, whether 5G can cover more areas and provide users with a better online experience will be a major issue to watch.
