Ms. María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, has returned home after more than 10 months of exile.
Since leaving, Ms. Machado has repeatedly said she would return home and declared that she would run for president again if an election were held. She left Venezuela in December to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, in recognition of her efforts to promote democratic rights in the country, and had not returned since then.
A month later, the United States launched an attack and captured Ms. Machado’s political rival, former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and supported Ms. Delcy Rodríguez to serve as acting president of Venezuela, a position she has continued to hold to the present.
However, the United States is currently working with the Venezuelan acting government to steer this country toward a democratic transition and political reconciliation, although Ms. Machado was excluded from the dialogue. By: Rithy
