Cambodian and US law enforcement agencies recently carried out a joint anti-drug operation, intercepting a fishing vessel in Koh Kong province suspected of transporting drugs. They seized nearly 979 kilograms of methamphetamine and arrested eight suspects.

According to the US Embassy in Cambodia, the operation was conducted in cooperation between the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Cambodia’s anti-drug police, and Koh Kong province police. Law enforcement officers tracked down a fishing vessel suspected of delivering drugs from Koh Kong Port to vessels in international waters, then intercepted it and seized the drugs.

The US side said the joint operation successfully prevented a large quantity of drugs from entering circulation and avoided its flow into the United States, Cambodia, and other regions. The operation also demonstrated cooperation between the two countries’ law enforcement agencies in combating transnational drug crime.

US officials said transnational criminal networks use Cambodia as a transit point for drug trafficking. The DEA said it will continue supporting Cambodian law enforcement agencies, strengthening intelligence sharing and joint law enforcement, and working together to combat transnational drug-trafficking networks and protect the safety and health of people in both countries.

The investigation and subsequent handling of the case remain pending further announcement.
