Cambodian director and LD Picture head Leak Lyda recently said he plans to pitch the historical film “The Tragedy of Ghost Mountain” to international streaming platform Netflix, hoping to introduce Cambodian cinema and history to more overseas viewers. Netflix has not confirmed any acquisition or release arrangements, and whether the film will appear on the platform remains uncertain.
Set against the history of “Ghost Mountain” on the Cambodia–Thailand border, the film focuses on Cambodian refugees’ experiences during wartime. The production team said it drew on historical materials, survivors’ recollections and testimony, and a memoir by Cambodian-American scholar Mengly J. Quach. Lyda said the team has prepared research materials to address questions about the film’s historical basis.
According to Cambodian media reports, the film is scheduled for a local theatrical release in November, with some reports giving November 6 as the date. The director believes domestic box-office performance can demonstrate Cambodian cinema’s market potential and may influence international distributors’ interest.

The film’s subject matter involving Cambodia–Thailand border history previously attracted attention from Thai media. Lyda said the production would be supported by historical records and survivors’ testimony. The film is still seeking international distribution opportunities, and a Netflix release remains undecided. Chinese translations of the title vary slightly across media outlets; the official Chinese title should be checked against the production company’s announcements.
