On the evening of October 31, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) issued a formal statement clarifying recent false online recruitment information concerning Cambodia’s Funan Techo Canal project. It urged job seekers to remain alert to fraud.

CRBC said it was the general contractor for the Funan Techo Canal project in Cambodia, but had never authorized any individual, organisation or institution to publish purported recruitment notices. It had not released such recruitment information on Douyin or other social media platforms either.

According to the statement, people had recently misused the canal project’s name to post recruitment information online, using names such as “Funan Techo Canal Project”, “Funan Techo Canal”, “Funan Canal” and “Cambodia Grand Canal” to attract job seekers. Some even used company names resembling CRBC’s to create false recruitment information and were suspected of charging job seekers high fees.

CRBC specifically urged job seekers not to readily believe purported internal recruitment or project hiring information online, and to verify it especially carefully when asked to pay registration, agency or other fees in advance.

Anyone seeking information about the company or the project should verify it through proper channels, such as the company’s official website, official WeChat account or in-person enquiries.

People who have suffered, or suspect they have suffered, fraud should promptly retain evidence such as chat records and transfer receipts and report the matter to local police.

CRBC also said it reserved the right to pursue legal liability against those involved in unlawful activities.
