Summary

A State Secretariat of Civil Aviation team inspected a proposed airport site in Ratanakiri on November 3. The project in Lumphat district would cover more than 1,905 hectares. Construction timing, investment and an opening date have not been announced.

Transport infrastructure in northeastern Cambodia could see new progress. On the morning of November 3, a secretary of state at Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation led a working group to inspect the proposed site of a new airport in Ratanakiri province, preparing for further planning and development.

According to information provided, the proposed airport would be located in Lumphat district, Ratanakiri province, on a planned site exceeding 1,905 hectares. The project aims to improve transport conditions in northeastern Cambodia and strengthen connections with other parts of the country and international markets.

Relevant parties said Ratanakiri is far from Cambodia’s major cities and remains relatively difficult to reach. This has affected tourist visits to some extent and increased the costs of exploratory visits and business activities for investors.

If the airport is built and enters service in the future, it is expected to reduce travel times, attract more domestic and international tourists and investors, and facilitate local tourism, trade and other industries.

Ratanakiri has abundant natural resources and development potential in mining, agriculture and ecotourism. The airport project is also expected to support local infrastructure development and create further economic opportunities.

However, the proposed airport remains at the site-inspection and planning stage. A specific construction schedule, investment amount and date for beginning operations have not been announced.
