A frightening incident recently occurred near Jiashao Bridge on the Qiantang River in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. A man had entered a prohibited riverside T-shaped groyne to fish when a sudden tidal bore swept over him, leaving onlookers alarmed.
Video from the scene shows the river rising rapidly as the tidal bore approaches, before the man is swept into the turbulent current. In the emergency, he swims hard toward the shallows by the bank and eventually manages to get ashore, narrowly escaping danger.
According to local media reports, the incident took place in waters east of Jiashao Bridge, an area where the Qiantang River tidal bore is particularly pronounced. Local rescuers warned that currents there are complex and rocks are densely scattered around the T-shaped groynes. Anyone swept away risks not only powerful currents but also collisions with submerged rocks, making the situation extremely dangerous.
Rescuers said the man was exceptionally fortunate to escape on his own. People must not underestimate the danger of the Qiantang River tidal bore simply because someone survived.
The incident is another reminder to follow safety rules when watching the tidal bore or fishing. Do not enter areas that are not open to the public, and never risk your life for a video or a thrill.
