Summary

Cambodia’s National Assembly president thanked China for its longstanding support during talks with Zhao Leji in Beijing, as both sides discussed deeper parliamentary and development cooperation.

Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary held talks with Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, while attending the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing. She expressed deep gratitude for the Chinese government’s and people’s longstanding support for Cambodia’s development across sectors. She stressed that Chinese assistance had not only advanced Cambodia’s economic and social progress but also helped it attain political independence and an equal place on the international stage.

Khuon Sudary said Chinese assistance projects had become an important driver of Cambodia’s development, encompassing infrastructure, socioeconomic improvements and better livelihoods. “China’s help brings not only development, but also the ability for Cambodia to act independently and participate in international affairs on an equal footing,” she said.

Zhao praised Cambodia’s rapid development in recent years, saying, “Cambodia’s progress is also China’s progress.” He said the countries would continue deepening strategic trust, advancing practical cooperation and implementing their Diamond Hexagon cooperation framework, including the Fish and Rice Corridor and Industrial and Technological Corridor, while further expanding access to the Chinese market for high-quality Cambodian products.

The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening the rule of law, multilateralism and fairness in global governance. Zhao said China supported Cambodia’s efforts to make the country prosperous and its people strong, and was willing to continue supporting key projects involving railways, expressways, the Funan Canal and solar energy.

Khuon Sudary also congratulated the Communist Party of China on its historic achievements under President Xi Jinping’s leadership. She said China’s prosperity was a shared source of pride for Cambodia and China: “China’s security is Cambodia’s security, and Cambodia’s stability is also China’s stability.”

The two parliamentary leaders agreed that the countries’ “ironclad friendship” continued to deepen and their cooperation was becoming more solid. Against a complex and changing global backdrop, this friendship had demonstrated strong resilience and continuing vitality.

At the end of the meeting, Khuon Sudary proposed expanding cooperation in culture, education and tourism. She encouraged China to strengthen publicity about Cambodia to promote mutually beneficial trade, investment and human-resource development.
