Internet connections may slow down…

Thai police and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) are continuing operations to cut communication links along the Cambodian border.

Thailand's Newsclip reported today that Thai authorities said the action implements government policy to crack down on cross-border telecom scams using mobile base stations and communication facilities inside Thailand.

From November 17 to 19, local police, the NBTC and telecom operators carried out joint operations in the eastern border province of Sa Kaeo, cutting fibre-optic and other cables leading into Cambodia.

The operations covered several key locations:

  • Behind the Ban Khlong Luk border checkpoint: cables belonging to nine companies, including AWN, TUC, Jastel and Symphony, were cut around the State Railway of Thailand station.

  • Near the checkpoint car park: backup links belonging to three companies, including AWN, Symphony and Interlink, were cut.

  • At the Thai–Cambodian Friendship Bridge: three links belonging to AWN and Symphony were cut.

The action completely severed the affected links' communications with Cambodia.

Thai police said: “By cutting off the communication channels used by overseas scam groups—that is, disconnecting their internet—we can prevent the number of victims in Thailand from growing further.” Police will continue working closely with the NBTC and telecom operators to cut the remaining links.
