In a recent briefing submitted to parliament, the Indian government said some Indian citizens had been lured by criminals through false job offers to Southeast Asian countries including Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos, where they were forced into online scams and other unlawful activities.
The briefing said India had cooperated with the governments and local law-enforcement agencies concerned and continued rescue efforts. As of the report, it had successfully helped rescue 6,720 Indian citizens: 2,265 in Cambodia, 2,290 in Laos and 2,165 in Myanmar.
India also said that distress-case complaints submitted by its citizens abroad during 2024–2025 were mainly concentrated in countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Oman, Kuwait and Canada. The government said it would strengthen international cooperation against transnational fraud and provide necessary consular protection and assistance to citizens abroad.
