On December 20, the report cited a recent Cambodian military briefing saying Thai forces were suspected of releasing several dogs to attack Cambodian frontline soldiers on duty near the border in Preah Vihear province. At least one soldier was injured, raising serious concern about possible rabies infection.
The injured soldier was rushed to Preah Vihear provincial hospital for initial treatment, then transferred to the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh for vaccination and specialised rabies monitoring and treatment. The provincial health department stressed that, because rabies has a high fatality rate, the injured soldier had received what it described as the highest level of prevention measures and follow-up.
According to Cambodian military personnel cited in the report, one aggressive dog was shot dead during the attack, while the others fled back into Thai territory.
