The special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 22. According to the ASEAN Chair’s statement, the meeting concluded without achieving a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, but paved the way for an extraordinary Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting tomorrow, December 24, 2025. Tomorrow’s GBC meeting would allow senior leaders of the two countries’ defence ministries to discuss implementation and verification of the ceasefire.
Nevertheless, ASEAN foreign ministers expressed hope for a de-escalation of hostilities as soon as possible. They also voiced deep concern over prolonged tensions and hostilities, which had caused extensive deaths and injuries, destruction of civilian infrastructure and displacement of civilians on both sides of the border. It should be recalled that the Thai military’s war of aggression against Cambodian territory erupted again after Thailand sent troops to invade Cambodian territory for a second time from December 7, 2025.
