Summary

Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry briefed 25 representatives of 22 diplomatic missions and international organisations on January 2 and expressed thanks for humanitarian support, especially from China.

On the afternoon of January 2, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation held a special briefing in Phnom Penh on the current Cambodia–Thailand border situation. The ministry’s spokesperson briefed 25 representatives from 22 diplomatic missions and international organisations based in Cambodia on the latest border developments and Cambodia’s recent diplomatic work.

The briefing focused on three areas:
First, the Joint Statement adopted and published at the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025;
Second, the important understandings reached at the meeting of the foreign ministers and senior military officials of Cambodia, Thailand and China in Yunnan, China, on December 29, 2025;
Third, the release and safe return of 18 Cambodian soldiers on December 31, 2025.

The spokesperson further briefed participants on the effects of recent border tensions on Cambodia, including civilian casualties, the displacement of some residents and varying degrees of damage to civilian property. The spokesperson attributed these consequences to military actions by Thai armed forces on Cambodian sovereign territory and in civilian areas, saying they had seriously affected local people’s lives and safety, normal livelihoods and production.

Finally, the spokesperson expressed sincere thanks to friendly countries and the international community for humanitarian assistance to Cambodia. The spokesperson stressed that this aid was providing, and would continue to provide, important support to people affected by the border situation. In particular, China’s assistance through bilateral channels and international and non-governmental organisations had played a positive and constructive role in easing humanitarian pressures and helping displaced people, the spokesperson said.
