Thailand recently reiterated its position on the Cambodia–Thailand border issue, saying it would propose resuming meetings of the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Boundary Commission after a new government had been fully formed, to continue work on surveying and demarcating the two countries’ land boundary.
According to reports by several Thai media outlets on January 12, Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said the Thai side was ready to restore the relevant negotiation mechanism. Before formal consultations could begin, however, domestic statutory procedures had to be completed, particularly the formation of a new government after the general election and internal coordination. Once the new government was formally in place, Thailand would propose meeting dates and an agenda to Cambodia through diplomatic channels.
Thailand will hold a general election on February 8. Under the political process, forming a new government was expected to take some time; if progress went smoothly, it might formally be established about two months after the election.
