On January 14, Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen marked the 41st anniversary of his initial appointment as Prime Minister. In a retrospective on his official Facebook page, he reviewed his political career, set out key stages of his involvement in state governance since the late 1970s and shared insights from his years of governing experience.

Hun Sen said he entered government in January 1979 at the age of 27 as Minister of Foreign Affairs, participating in national reconstruction and foreign affairs. In June 1981, aged 29, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and assumed greater responsibilities in domestic and foreign affairs. In 1985, at 32, he became head of government and, at that time, the world’s youngest prime minister.

He said that, since 1979, he had worked in the government’s executive system for more than 44 years, then continued serving in the Senate for nearly three years after leaving the premiership, bringing his political career to more than 47 years. The article described this long public-service experience as spanning almost the entire course of Cambodia’s post-war reconstruction, political transition and economic development, and giving him experience in responding to crises and governing amid complex, changing domestic and international conditions.
