Japanese police recently arrested 13 Japanese nationals deported from Cambodia, aged between 20 and 63. Cambodian police had arrested them at a scam compound in Bavet in November 2025.
Investigators said the group allegedly impersonated police officers to defraud a woman in her 60s living in Kanagawa prefecture of 11 million yen, approximately US$69,000, between October and November 2025. The 13 suspects mainly made scam calls. The group was also linked to more than ten other cases, with the total amount involved reaching US$314,000.
More than 50 people were arrested at the compound at the time, including Japanese, Filipino and Vietnamese nationals. Tokyo police are continuing to investigate how the criminal base operated and how these Japanese nationals became involved.
