Summary

Sun Chanthol said Belt and Road cooperation provides important support for Cambodia’s infrastructure and growth. Cambodia welcomes lawful investment from all countries and will continue combating online scams to safeguard its investment and tourism environment.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia Sun Chanthol said in a recent interview that China’s Belt and Road Initiative had provided important support for Cambodia’s economic development, particularly infrastructure construction, and had become an “economic lifeline” driving national growth. He thanked the Chinese government and people, particularly Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Discussing investment and trade, Sun Chanthol noted that China had remained Cambodia’s largest source of foreign investment for many consecutive years. He stressed that Cambodia welcomes lawful investment from all countries without discrimination and encourages more Chinese enterprises to invest. He said Cambodia has advantages as a regional hub, its new investment law offers various incentives, and the country has strong development potential. Cambodia also expects more Chinese tourists in 2026, which would provide an important boost to the local economy.

In the year marking the 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Sun Chanthol recalled the deep friendship established by Cambodia’s King Father Norodom Sihanouk and earlier generations of Chinese leaders. He said the relationship had been consolidated during Hun Sen’s leadership and continued to deepen under Prime Minister Hun Manet, with the two sides maintaining an “ironclad friendship”. He reiterated Cambodia’s firm adherence to the one-China policy and its intention to continue cracking down on online scams and other illegal activities to create a safe and stable environment for investment and tourism.
