China’s embassy in Cambodia again urged Cambodian authorities to take measures strengthening protection for Chinese citizens after receiving reports of several missing Chinese citizens who had not yet been found. The renewed request came when Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin met Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha.
Wang directly raised several missing-person cases involving Chinese citizens in Cambodia, which China was following closely. He stressed that many serious cases involving Chinese citizens were closely linked to online-scam crime. Their frequent occurrence did not accord with traditional China–Cambodia friendship and seriously hindered strengthening and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.
Wang added that China attached great importance to its citizens’ safety and lawful rights in Cambodia. He called for practical measures to crack down strictly on crimes targeting Chinese citizens, including unlawful detention, violence and online scams, improve rescue efficiency and ensure citizens’ safety.
The Chinese embassy’s press release also highlighted the Cambodian Interior Ministry’s response: the government was taking firm measures and applying legal powers strictly against online scams and crimes targeting Chinese citizens, aiming to safeguard their safety and security in Cambodia as effectively as possible.
