On January 20, former employees of the Jinbei 1 casino jointly complained to the provincial labour department in Sihanoukville. According to the report, the casino had abruptly closed, its owner’s whereabouts were unknown, and unpaid wages and loss of income had left them in difficulty. On-site reports described thousands of Cambodian workers facing similar wage arrears.
The report says the government’s recent intensified checks on online scams and other criminal activity led to closure orders for some casinos suspected of being connected with scams. It says some owners fled abroad, forming a wave of departures that in turn led to casino closures and wage arrears. Affected workers were seeking the authorities’ intervention, hoping the government would help recover unpaid wages and properly address unemployment relief arising from the concentrated closures. The report describes the disruptive effects of the anti-scam crackdown as gradually becoming apparent.
