Cambodia's government recently said it was assessing whether to accept US President Trump's invitation to join the US-backed Board of Peace. Officials said an invitation to participate as a founding member was recognition, but a final decision had not yet been made.
The body was envisaged as an international mechanism for long-term peace in the Middle East, especially Gaza. Under the charter, membership terms generally do not exceed three years, subject to renewal by the chairman; members contributing more than US$1 billion in cash to the Board in the first year after the charter enters into force are exempt from that three-year term limit. Government spokesperson Pen Bona said the invitation recognised Cambodia's role as a symbol of peace, a direction the government had consistently upheld.
Academics nevertheless cautioned that the initiative might raise Cambodia's international profile while also creating financial pressure and geopolitical considerations, requiring a careful assessment of national interests. Vietnam had announced acceptance, while Thailand was still considering it. Trump had formally invited Prime Minister Hun Manet in a January 16 letter.
