Summary

Officials reported daily waste approaching 1100 tonnes and planned a temporary disposal site in 2026, while roadside cameras were being used to monitor littering.

Sihanoukville has installed cameras along some roads to monitor indiscriminate dumping and improve waste-disposal order and hygiene. Officials said waste in Preah Sihanouk province had risen sharply from over 800 to nearly 1100 tonnes a day, leaving the disposal site unable to take further waste.

Hip Sokhannaro, manager of the provincial disposal site, attributed the sharp rise to new habits of buying goods and ordering meals through delivery services since the COVID-19 pandemic. Waste had continued increasing since then.

In response, he said the province would prepare another temporary disposal site in 2026. He hoped that in 2027 the Environment Ministry would help coordinate a new site meeting hygiene and technical standards. He also urged everyone to dispose of and sort waste correctly and reduce packaging.

To prevent indiscriminate dumping from damaging public order and the city's appearance, Sihanoukville Mayor Sor Kakada told habitual litterers that those wishing to avoid embarrassment should dispose of waste correctly: the city had installed cameras on some roads to monitor dumping. He did not specify the number of camera locations.
