On January 27, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet explained Cambodia’s joining of the Board of Peace through social media, responding to public questions about a large membership payment and clarifying what he described as misunderstandings.
He said Cambodia, as a founding member, did not have to pay any membership fee during its first three-year term. The reported US$1 billion fee applied only to countries seeking permanent membership and did not apply to Cambodia’s present category of membership, he said.
Hun Manet stressed that joining the Board of Peace demonstrated Cambodia’s firm support for peace and participation in global peace governance, consistent with its longstanding peace policy. Cambodia had deployed peacekeepers to several countries under the United Nations for many years, actively participating in international peacekeeping, and he said joining would further enhance its participation and influence in global peace affairs.
