Summary

Hun Manet said on January 27 that Cambodia accepted an invitation to become a founding Board of Peace member for a three-year term without payment; the US$1 billion payment concerned permanent membership.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on his official Telegram channel on the morning of January 27 that Cambodia had decided to become a founding member of the Board of Peace, following an invitation from US President Donald J. Trump dated January 16, 2026. Participation for a three-year term did not require payment.

Responding to questions from some members of the public about Cambodia’s financial obligations, he explained that founding membership for a three-year term did not require payment. The US$1 billion payment applied only to long-term, permanent membership.

Hun Manet said the participation demonstrated Cambodia’s willingness to support and contribute to global peacekeeping. Goodwill, a love of peace and support for building and maintaining peace were principles Cambodia had consistently upheld, particularly through deploying peacekeepers under the United Nations to missions in several countries affected by war, he said.
