Responding to social-media allegations that Koh Muoy in Preah Sihanouk and Koh Ky in Kampot had been sold to private companies, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) issued a statement on January 28 denying that the government had sold the islands.
The statement said both islands were state private property, legally owned by the state and available for economic development under relevant laws and regulations. Under the government's development plans, private companies would develop them only through lawful leases, mainly for tourism. No sale was involved.
The CDC said the government had never sold any island to a private company or sold islands within Cambodia's territorial waters. It called the social-media allegations unfounded and urged the public to assess online information carefully, rely on official releases and avoid spreading unverified claims.
