Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts recently lodged a strong protest with Thailand’s Culture Ministry over Thai activities at the Ta Moan and Ta Krabei temple complexes. Cambodia reiterated that both sites lie in Oddar Meanchey province and form part of its sovereign territory, citing the 1904 and 1907 Franco-Siamese treaties and officially recognised maps, and said Thailand must not undertake construction or restoration without permission.
Cambodia expressed deep concern over severe damage to Ta Krabei, an eleventh-century temple left almost destroyed after repeated Thai military shelling and attacks last December. It said any use of force against cultural heritage, unauthorised restoration or construction, or action harming the temples’ historical, cultural and legal status was unacceptable. It demanded that Thailand immediately stop such actions, respect Cambodian sovereignty and resolve disputes peacefully and lawfully.

Cambodia also described destruction such as that at Ta Krabei as an affront to the Cambodian people’s spirit and identity. The Culture Ministry said it would continue protecting national cultural heritage and cooperate on the basis of mutual respect and international law. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said Thai forces had invaded and occupied Cambodian territory including O Smach, Kena Temple, Ta Krabei and Ta Moan Thom during December 7–27 last year.
