Environment Ministry Secretary of State Mom Thany chaired a meeting on February 9 to review and establish principles, criteria and indicators for a carbon-neutral community. The aim was to transform Koh Sralau into such a community and a green leisure destination attracting domestic and international visitors.
The ministry plans to develop Koh Sralau as a model carbon-neutral island in Cambodia through cooperation with relevant partners. Alternative livelihoods and occupations would support conservation, climate resilience and environmental hygiene, keeping land, air and water clean. Developing a green leisure destination was also intended to reduce pressure on natural resources and promote their conservation.
Koh Sralau community is in Koh Sralau village, Koh Kapi commune, Koh Kong district and province. Surrounded by mangroves, it has abundant fresh natural seafood and rich biodiversity, with about 300 community households depending on its resources. By: Chinta Titi.
