Large numbers of foreigners have recently travelled from online-scam compounds in O’Smach, Oddar Meanchey province, to Phnom Penh. They sought assistance from their countries’ embassies and consulates and humanitarian organisations, hoping to return home soon.
Some people, after leaving those locations, lacked lawful status and financial means and became temporarily stranded or slept on the streets. The local humanitarian organisation Caritas said limited resources and space made it difficult to cope with the growing number of people seeking help.
