Summary

The authority called for factual, responsible communication and joint technical checks, while setting out Cambodia’s position on the mine-ban convention.

Cambodia’s Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority recently issued a statement urging the public to be cautious, factual and responsible when reporting or circulating information about landmines found at the border, especially anti-personnel mines, to avoid misunderstandings or unnecessary tensions. It said Cambodia had fully complied with the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, had laid no new mines and had not changed its policy position.

The authority said mines and explosive remnants of past wars continued to threaten the Cambodia–Thailand border, where such explosives were still being found on both sides. It urged stronger bilateral cooperation on mine clearance to reduce risks for border communities.

The statement said unilateral preservation of evidence and publication of conclusions without joint technical verification could not readily be regarded as a professional and objective factual inquiry. It described mines as a technical and humanitarian issue that should not be politicised. Cambodia reiterated that it would use existing bilateral mechanisms for technical assessment and verification and cooperate constructively and transparently to ensure border safety and stability.
