Summary

Thai police investigated after two men and two women escaped from a pickup in Mae Sot and said they feared being taken to a scam compound in Myanmar.

Four Chinese nationals, two men and two women, escaped from a moving grey Chevrolet pickup in Mae Sot, Tak province, Thailand, in a suspected human-trafficking case. The incident occurred at about 9: 30 p.m. on March 9. The pickup carried a Tak registration plate. The driver, suspected to be Thai, abandoned the vehicle and fled.

According to the report’s account of surveillance footage, a man in the front passenger seat jumped out and repeatedly tried to open a rear door. The driver accelerated, but the other three people eventually escaped as well. Residents helped them.

Community leaders notified police. The four said they had entered Thailand through Chiang Mai province as tourists on March 6, were then induced to get into the vehicle and feared being taken to a scam compound in Myanmar. They asked for help returning to China.

Police said entry records matched their account. Authorities assisted them in travelling by bus to Bangkok and contacted the Chinese Embassy to help arrange their return. The suspected trafficking case remained under investigation.
