During traditional Khmer New Year, Phnom Penh’s former international airport opened to the public on a trial basis as a public park. On the first day, April 11, about 15,000 residents and tourists were reported to have visited, turning the once tightly controlled airport into a new recreation venue attracting attention.
During the nine-day trial from April 11 to 19, visitors could enter previously restricted areas, including the runway, apron, VIP terminal, and the landmark fan-shaped building and control tower dating to the 1950s. The grounds offered space for walking and relaxation, with traditional Chhay Yam drumming dance, Troddi dance and classical instrumental performances creating a festive cultural atmosphere.
The opening aimed to give residents a close experience of architectural heritage carrying historical memories and to provide a public space combining history and recreation for the New Year holiday. The report presents it as an expression of renewed vitality in Phnom Penh’s urban development.
