Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence said on May 25 that the Cambodian side suspected gunshots heard near the border on the evening of May 24 had come from the Thai side and had asked Thailand to verify the incident.
According to the ministry, five shots were heard at 7:57 p.m. in the Phnom Troap area of Preah Vihear province, followed by three at 8:08 p.m. in the Phnom Sambok Khmum area. The liaison team of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ Military Region 4 contacted Thailand’s Army Area 2 on May 25 to seek verification.
The Cambodian side asked Thailand to establish the facts, enforce military discipline and comply with the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Joint Statement of December 27, 2025, to help manage the border situation.
The ministry also rejected an allegation that Cambodian soldiers had fired on two occasions in the Phnom Troap area that evening, describing the claim as unfounded.
The ministry reaffirmed that Cambodian forces had observed military discipline and agreements between the two countries, and reiterated Cambodia’s position of maintaining peace along the border.
