Recent student violence occurred inside and outside schools. In one reported case, six boys assaulted one boy at Samdech Hun Sen Bun Rany Chbar Ampov High School; in another, six teenage girls assaulted one girl at Phsar Deum Thkov High School in Phnom Penh. The report says victims’ guardians agreed to settle the disputes through guidance and undertakings to stop such conduct. The Education Ministry also imposed a full month of work at school on the students involved.
According to a press statement, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport instructed school heads to use educational and disciplinary measures, including direct counselling and undertakings acknowledged and signed by parents or guardians. It required a month of school work, apart from any other legal measures implemented by the competent authorities.
The ministry said continued violence could result in temporary suspension for one or two weeks or transfer to another class or school. It instructed heads and teachers to monitor, observe and intervene promptly in unusual student behaviour, and schools to strengthen cooperation with families, communities and local authorities to prevent violence inside and outside school.
